Rugby Mourns Colin Hillman
After a long battle with pancreatic cancer a very good friend and former player with The Sports, Colin Hillman, passed away Thursday 2nd July. We were fortunate that in the twilight of his career he was player coach with Bridgend Sports. Colin was also a well respected 7s coach with Wales. I am sure you will all join with me and on behalf of Bridgend Sports by passing on our sincere condolences to his family and close friends.
Colin played senior rugby for Bridgend Sports at the age of 17 playing for the Sports’ 3rd XV when it was permitted to play senior rugby at 17 provided it was not with the 1st XV; Colin having come from Bridgend Youth.
Colin enjoyed his season with Bridgend Sports so much that Aurwel Morgan, Secretary, had to persuade Colin to return to Bridgend Youth so that he could earn his Wales Youth Cap. Colin went on to play with distinction for Bridgend and South Wales Police and played representative rugby for Wales B, Crawshays and The Barbarians.

Rhigos 28 Sports 22
On a windy Friday evening with nothing really at stake apart from pride these two teams played an exciting game that rather resembled a contact training session. There was lots of open running from both sides and lots of mistakes. From a bad Sports throw at the line out near the Sports line, Rhigos capitalised on a fumble and Dwayne Dudley fell over the line for the first try. Luke Williams missed the conversion. There was a poor restart from the Sports and Rhigos were keen to run at the visitors who’s defence was again strong. The heavier Rhigos pack put the Sports scrum under pressure and they conceded a penalty that Luke Williams converted to make the score 8-0.

Early pressure in the opening minutes came from the visitors who used the wind to gain territorial advantage and were awarded a penalty that fly half Luke Williams missed. The Sports attacked from deep and when they had a easier chance when Rhigos handled in a ruck but without a kicking tee at hand, Nathan Townley fluffed the attempt. Scott Narbeth was looking sharp on the Sports right wing and needed good defence from the visitors to halt his running style. Ogmore Vale 10 Sports 9
Bridgend Sports were looking to continue their impressive form of the last month when they visited Ogmore Vale on Saturday. However a resolute home defence had other ideas and Ogmore Vale were far more physical and organised in defence than the Sports have been used too. The visitors had a few try scoring opportunities but failed to take them in the fist 20 minutes. Carter tackled well from full back and when a wayward kick from Ogmore was cleaned up by Michael ‘Mitch’ John, it was the centre who broke the deadlock after 15 minutes with a fine drop goal from 40 metres.

The Sports continued their recent good form when they ran in 5 tries to beat their visitors easily. Three tries came from Michael 'Mitch' John who punched his way through the fragile visitors defence with Townley feeding him well. There was another excellent opening try for Jamie Lorrimer who ran through three defenders to set up the Sports on the way to another win.
Silver Ball Semi Final Prior to that the clubs met on a regular basis in the Wistech Central Glamorgan League, and it was fifth-division Sports who soon laid out their stall at the Dairy Field. Though the Bandstand Field side were always eager to attack, Quins almost recorded an early try through captain Richard Wanklyn. Quins built momentum on the back of some rip-roaring darts from wings Steve Colarusso and Adam Dawe – and they were well supported by full back Mike Parfitt. Having foiled Sports centre Roddy Boobyer, soon after Parfitt ignited an attack that led to wing Adam Dawe touching down close to the posts. Marc Sheppard converted. Sat 4th April Cathays 31 Sports 2nd XV 22 Sat 28th March Top of the table Pyle visited number two team, the Sports, knowing it was going to be a tight encounter after a great game at Pyle earlier in the season when Pyle won 26-17, although being out try scored three to two by the visitors. From the outset both sides were looking to widen the attack and testing out the opposition defence. For the Sports it was Roddy Boobyer who threatened the Pyle with intelligent chips behind the defending backs. Pyle, in turn, had Cliff Ricketts at outside half, who looked dangerous and very street-wise in his ball distribution and territory gaining clearances. His opposite number Jayce Evans, was the youngest player on the field but was not overawed in any way and he moved the Spots threes with great resolve.
However, when Ryan Morgan was injured at full back, Evans, slipped back to full back to allow Nathan Townley to come on as sub and take the no. 10 shirt to which he has become attached this season.

On a very cold afternoon at Waterton Cross South Wales Police played a very positive game against a more experienced Sports side. The early pressure came from the Police and they were rewarded when Ryan Miles scored a good penalty after sustained Police pressure catching the Sports offside. After this 10 minute spell, the Sports followed a long diagonal kick from fly half Boobyer and put the Police back three under pressure allowing Paul Carter to take an interception from a hurries pass. Jayce Evans added the points to make it 3-7. After a further spell of Sports pressure the Police failed to find touch from with a clearance kick, it fell to Michael ‘Mitch’ John, who widened the attack with the help of Boobyer, who was supported by Jamie Lorrimer. He found Gary Plaster on his shoulder and the hooker scored under the posts. Sports 16 Ogmore Vale 10
Luke Williams for Rhigos was looking more mature than his years as he secured good field position and when the Sports were caught off side, he broke the deadlock with a good penalty. Just before half time Rhigos stole a Sports lineout and as heavyweight Rhidian Williams looped at the tail of the line he just found the room to squeeze over for Williams to make the half time score 0-10.

Blaengarw 0 Sports 51
In glorious sunshine the Garw valley hosted a fine game in Division five that ended with a scoreline that slightly flattered the visitors. Blaengarw were caught napping when Jamie Lorimer bust through their defence following a poor clearance kick. The conversion against the strong wind failed. Blaengarw used the wind advantage well and were kicking for territory into the bottom corner of the pitch. When the Sports gained a scrum on the Blaengarw 22 metre line, an orthodox quick passing movement with Michael ‘Mitch’ John at the center of it allowed Leigh Evans to score in the corner. With the score at 0-10 the Sports were not taking anything for granted and accepted the offer of a easy penalty, when Blaengarw handled in a ruck. Jayce Evans converted. 0-13. The Blaengarw defence was strong with skipper, open side, Rhys Morgan tackling like a demon. Often positioning himself in the threes to target the threat of Roddy Boobyer.
Cefn Cribbwr 14 Sports 38
With last minute changes to the selected Sports side, this game had the makings of a hotly contested match from the outset. The Sports chose to play with the strong wind, knowing that conditions can change so easily where the ‘Riders’ ride the ridge.
There was lots of early pressure from the Sports but final passes that should have gone to hand were poorly executed or not even delivered. However, this continued pressure forced Cefn into a handling offence which the Sports, through Nathan Townley accepted with a penalty to make the score 0-3.
The heavy Cefn pack was making life difficult for the Sports, but when Gary Punter once more scrambled a loose ball to scrum half, Chris Morgan, it looked a face-saving retreat ball. Morgan, however, had other ideas, and sold a classic dummy to split the Cefn defence and did not need the supports close to him, as he ran in a spectacular try under the posts that was converted easily by Townley.
Sports 8 Pyle 8
It was a wet, misty cold evening at Glamorgan Wanderers ground when
the Sports lined up against a big strong Barry side. All the early
pressure came from the Barry three quarters, who looked impressive but
as it turned out they only seemed to have one game plan which was a
crash ball from number 10 to either the centre or full back. When this
didn’t work they did the same move from loose play bringing in their
number 8 forward. Initial this caught the Sports off guard but as soon
as it was understood they set about a resolute defensive platform that
has served them well this season.
Their first real attack from a Michael John interception took them
deep into the Barry half and with speed merchant Leigh Evans in
support a well timed pass from ‘Mitch’ gave the sports the 5-0 lead.
Barry continued their driving game, only to vary it on occasions with
a lofted high ball.
The second and third positions in this league played out a fine game with the good crowd being well entertained. All the early pressure came from the visiting Sports Club who were intent on attacking from any position. This rather took the home team by surprise and they defended well as Nathan Townley, restored to fly half was moving the ball well from the outset. The rattled home defence had Rod Morris at scrum half and he made a fine break into the Sports 22 metre line with covering tackles coming from Rhys Dowling and Scott Narbeth.
The Cwmgwrach kicking game was being returned with fine running attacks from Leigh Evans and Michael John. For Cwmgwrach it was John McPhail who was driving well in the pack and fly half, Bowen who was kicking deep at every chance. The attacking of the Sports began to discourage this tactic and the lines out were being taken well for the Sports by Justin Davies and Phil John.

Going into this game, Girling RFC from the Newport District League were something of an unknown quantity to the Bridgend Sports 2nds, but they very quickly made their mark on this game.
Straight from the kick-off the experienced Girling team switched the direction of the kick which lead to some early pressure and the opening try, and within minutes a quickly taken tap penalty had raced the score on to 12-0 to Girling.
It's fair to say that "the sports" had started slowly in this fixture, but some hope was given when regular first team star Ryan Morgan came off the bench to add some class to the Sports play, although he was powerless to prevent a further score by Girling from a fine move created my their outside half Adrian Smith.
With 30 minutes gone and the sports down by 17 points to nil, it was veteran captain Paul Jurkiewicz who lead the comeback with strong run to make the score 17-7 at half-time.

The Sports Club welcomed old friends Ogmore Vale to the Bandstand field in bright, crisp winter conditions. Both teams had lost only one game to date but both also were forced into positional changes through non-availabilities. From their kick off the visitors were awarded a penalty for obstruction but Gareth Powell missed an early chance to take the lead. The first encounters saw Ogmore pin back he Sports in their own half, but the home defence held well with Ryan Wallis again making important tackles. The Sports tight forwards were driving well with Jo Bryant making good yards. Dean Griffiths, out of position at second row, also was making his presence felt.
