Sports 36 SWP 3

Bridgend Sports Club 36 South Wales Police 3 On a very hot afternoon at the Bandstand field the Sports welcomed a Police side that has had a turbulent start to the season having had over 100 points against them in two games.

After initial early Sports pressure where Roddy Boobyer was unlucky to spill the ball on the line after a fine thrusting run and the Sports gained a lineout on the Police line, the Police pinched the line throw and drove up field to force the Sports into handling on the ground and second row Gerald Hodgeson stepped up and promptly put the Police 0-3 ahead.

Police flanker Ross Williams was making a total nuisance of himself with great play around the base of rucks and set pieces. Sports’ centre Paul Jurkiewicz first created a good overlap for wing Richard Byrne and then from the ensuing scrum took a great pass from Nathan Townley for a crash ball try under the posts.

Townley added to points. From a similar position some 5 minutes later it was Rhys Dowling’s turn to break from the base of the scrum and put blind side winger Richard Byrne in for a well taken unconverted try making the half time score 3-12.
From the re-start and from deep in the Sports 22 metre line Jayce Evans made a brilliant 50 yard break, found Boobyer on his shoulder who took the ball and seeing he was being closed down, and seeing Ryan Wallis in support chipped the ball to under the posts for Wallis to fumble over the line. An effort he was to receive a special prize for later in the evening. It was a good looking attack, just failing.

However at the following scrum, which the Sports front row were starting to dominate, they took the ball off the Police head and Dowling needed no support in driving over. Townley making the scoreline 19-3.

In no way were the Police heads dropping they were full of ideas but from a quick Police drop out it was Sports centre Jurkiewicz who read it and taking a clean catch found the ever present Byrne in support who made 20 yards before off-loading to ‘man of the match’, second row, Phil John to crash over the line for an unconverted try.

With the score at 24 -3 coach Rees was able to utilize the impressive replacement bench at this stage. Lorrimer, Channell and Jo Bryant coming on to make strong contributions. With Scott Narbeth adding his brand of running soon after.
Again from deep in the Police half it was Evans and Townley who unlocked the visitors defence, again finding Byrne in support who made the yards and the impressive Evans just kept on running and gave Byrne the option for the inside pass. Evans scoring a fine first try for the Sports.

Another failed clearance from the Police allowed some good space for Ryan Morgan to pick up the deep ball he ran well to create a two man overlap, but did not need it, wrong footing the visitors and scoring a fine individual try under the posts.
Townley made the final score 36 -3 in and afternoon of good rugby played in the true spirit of the game.
