Rhigos 3 Sports 18

Bridgend Sports travelled to Rhigos for the second time this season, having won an early cup match during November. The conditions were very similar but this time the visitors were better prepared to deal with the large home team pack and heavy pitch conditions. Early pressure came from the Sports with the back row combination of Gary Punter, Ian Boobyer and Keith Burke driving forward and picking up where they left off last week.

A handling error on in the mud allowed the Sports through Nathan Townley to take the lead with a well struck penalty. The Sports continued to apply pressure in the tight scrum with Ryan Wallace back at hooker and the ever stable Jo Bryant and Rhys Brewer either side of him as props taking on their heavier opponents. However, it was Jamie Lorrimer who ran through to grab the first Sports try. Townley could not add the points. The Sports continued to attack but were being slowed down from their normal game by the heavy conditions and were frustrated when at half time it was just 0-8.

From the restart, Rhigos, having taken so much of the Sports attack in the first period, forced themselves into a good attacking field position and it was the Sports that conceded an un-forced error and allowed Rhigos outside half, David Price to shorten the lead to 3-8. The visitors ploughed their way up field and were attacking from short tight passing and driving when Jamie Lorrimer took control to drive over for his second try. Townley could not convert it.

With Chris Morgan restored to the scrum half position the Sports continued to try and widen their attack and after several pairs of hands had spun the sticky ball in both directions, it was Nathan Townley who took the final pass to score wide out, but again the heavy conditions prevented him adding the points. The last 10 minutes proved to be the best period of play for Rhigos as they piled on the pressure and were camped in the Sports ‘22’ for a considerable time. With Dean Grifiths replacing Brewer in the front row, the visitors defence was well and truly up to keeping the visitors at bay.
