Tylorstown 34 Sports 13

On a cool afternoon this Cup game favoured the division 3 home side who were most adept at playing the rather narrow pitch. Whilst the Sports wanted to widen the attack whenever possible, Tylorstown played a more rounded game attacking through their strong pack and widening the attack when needed. The opening encounters saw a ping-pong of high balls aimed at testing the defence. Each holding out until a scrum near the Sports line allowed an extra drive to release quick ball for the home centre Llewellyn to open the scoring wide out. A fine conversion from Jason Pike taking the lead to 7-0. From the re-start the home team conceded a penalty which Nathan Townley converted, pushing the temperature of the game up a notch.

Roddy Boobyer was strong in defence giving a captains performance and leading by example with regular captain Chris Norris sidelined through injury. The territorial advantage at this point was to the Sports with Jamie Lorrimer making strong runs at the home team, unfortunately without a lot of support. Gary Punter did a sterling job at the back of a scrum often in retreat and fed the threes as often as the scrum half did. Assistant coach Rhys Dowling was a livewire at openside until a knee injury forced him to the bench.
Townley missed a few penalty chances before Tylorstown got their game plan back on board with Pike notching two penalties before Townley responded with one before half time and a scoreline of 13-6. The second half saw the Sports again trying to widen the attack but being thwarted by the home side who covered the narrow pitch well in defence.

The Sports 'back three' of Ryan Morgan, Ritchie Byrne and Jayce Evans defended competently, were under a lot of pressure but worked well as a unit. Patience was with the home side and when Hamming crossed for a well worked try it was Pike who efficiently made the extra points. The same combination went into play 10 minutes later and the Hamming/Pike combo adding a further 7 points. The Sports refused to lie down and the last action came from them. Townley picked up a loose ball, slipped the defence and scored a good try that he converted to make the final score 34-13.

For the Sports Roddy Boobyer was man of the match. He got over the gain line at every opportunity retaining possession and giving the forwards a solid target. Although disappointed with the loss the Sports will take heart from this performance against a most credible side and powerful pack. Next week the home game is against Cefn Cribwr where another strong pack will no doubt be encountered.
