Sports 18 Cardiff Uni 14
The early pressure in this Cup fixture came from the home side, who although without a few regular 1st teamers looked to be settled and set up some good quick ball from set pieces. After 10 minutes this pressure paid off when a movement to Ritchie Byrne on the right wing was well supported on the inside by full back Nathan Townley who dived over for the first try. His kick just failed. Ian Boobyer at wing forward was playing well and it was he started the second try when he picked up a loose ball at the base of the Cardiff scrum and run 10 yards to set up a ruck, quick ball from Rhys Dowling was smoothly taken by Roddy Boobyer who scored under the posts. Townley made it 12-0 with his conversion.
Cardiff then put on some pressure of their own and unlike many university team choose a tight forward driving approach. From first phase lineout possession centre Harri Morgan burst through the Sports’ centres and made a try under the posts look very easy. Outside half Ollie jenkins adding the points to make it 12-7. This remained the score to half time as both sides were attempting an expansive game but looked somewhat match-rusty and finishing passing was poor and simple mistakes becoming the norm. For Cardiff University,Gareth Clwyd-Jones was dominating the lines out and making life difficult for the Sports. Given a few penalty opportunities, the Sports elected to kick to the corner although their line out was not consistent.
Eventually, Michael ‘Mitch’ John broke the vistitor's defence, found Townley on his shoulder but the final pass to Byrne was not good and another try went begging. This continued pressure began to pay off as Cardiff conceded two penalties in short order. Both were converted by Townley and the Sports were cruising to a win at 18-7. However, the young visitors had other ideas and put their tight game plan back to work. This allowed them to create an overlap on the right wing which allowed Brett Chatwin to round the Sorts defence and score under to posts. A try that Ollie Jenkins made no mistake with. The final 10 minutes with the score at 18-14 was tense as the Sports were close to losing a game which the should have been well ahead in.
There were good performances from Townley and Roddy Boobyer in the threequarters, but when it came to man of the match, the coaches could not separate any of the back row of Punter, Burke and Boobyer... so a joint award was given to these three.
The Sports are playing Rhigos next week, away, in an attempt to clear the backlog of unplayed games.
