Sports 12 Baglan 5
In freezing wintry conditions the Sports kicked off this game with the advantage of a powerful wind. Although Murphy at fullback and Townley at outside half did a good job at establishing field position, the Baglan defence and their front five in particular were a formidable unit. With 10 minutes to go to half time it looked to be a scoreless half. A moment of magic by Townley where he took quick ball from Pengilly at scrum half, fed Lewis in the centre, took the loop pass and sidestepped his way under the posts and the kicked the conversion making the score 7-0. From the kick off and on the stroke of half time with the powerful Baglan front five tucking the ball up their shirts and driving for the line, it was number 8 Craig Gregory who finished the move to score half way out. Daniel Blethyn failed with the kick as the ref blew up for half time.
The conditions worsened in the second half and the Sports were under a lot of pressure with Blethyn using the strong wind to good advantage. The Sports then seemed to step up a gear and should have scored two or three tries, but the final pass failed to go to hand as the biting wind made it difficult. The Sports back row were cleaning up good ball and the team looked fitter than the visitors. From quick ball at a ruck it was Townley again who run wide and with vision chipped the ball over the defence for Ryan Morgan to score in the corner. He failed with a difficult kick. 12-5. At this point, with 10 minutes left, it was all Sports pressure with Mark Harris and Gary Punter making good yards. The forwards were well led by Dowling and scrum half Pengilly a vital link as he sent the threes off time and time again. Two more tries went begging again as the conditions had the last say.
Final score 12-5 in a game played with great spirit by both sides.
