Sports 2nd XV 34 Usk 26
Never could the saying 'Its a game of two halves' be more applicable. In the first game of the season Bridgend Sports 2nds miraculously pulled off a remarkable 2nd half comeback to thrill the home supporters.
The visitors totally dominated the opening 35 minutes scoring 4 unanswered tries thanks to some weak Sports defence and lack lustre tackling.
A well exectued try from centre Richie Bryne on the stroke of half time gave the home side some hope, but nobody expected what was to follow. Straight from the whistle of the 2nd half, the Sports pack started the control rucks and mauls and win the race to the breakdown.
Much improved tackling and well worked set pieces saw the Sports increase the tempo of the game. Tries from wingers Chris and brother Ben Adrian and a fine debut try from No 8 Gareth Plaster cut the deficit to just 6 points.
Continued pressure from the more clinical Sports three-quarter line and some fine support play from the forwards resulted in a opportunist try for blindside Chris Davies to touch down under the posts, Davies coverting his own try to see the Sport edge ahead.
With 10 minutes remaining another debutant flanker Mike Hurford rather dubiously claimed his first try for the club, with Chris Adrian converting to leave the final score 34-26.
A truly outstanding 2nd half turnaround full of gritty determination and commitment. A perfect start to the season for the 2nd XV and a lot of confidence to take into the next game.
