Sports 2nd XV 41 Llantwit Major 8

Bridgend Sports 2nd XV continued their impressive start to the season with a comprehensive 41-8 victory against Llantwit Major in the district cup. In wet & windy conditions, the Sports three quarters immediately applied the defensive pressure on their opposition and a spilled ball in midfield allowed centre Andy Milne to pick up and run in from the halfway line, conversion was missed.

Veteran prop John Sawyer and hooker Kurt Dent controlled the scrums from the onset, which provided a great platform for the Sports backs.
However it were the visitors who scored the next try, a neatly carved angle from the scrum half who fed their No 8 to score out wide, again the conversion going wide. Llantwit then punished Sports indiscipline with a penalty to take the lead.

From there – the Sports took control of the match and some excellent work at the ruck area saw the forwards dominate possession. Prominent displays from the back row of Sean Haren, Steve Hearne and Ian John in the loose play, coupled with the marshalling at outside half by Geraint Lewis soon resulted in a try for wing Dai Rees who slid in the corner after some great handling in the windy conditions. And just before halftime, hard-running centre Scott Narbeth crashed through the defence to score on his return from injury, Rees converting.

The 2nd half started much the same, with some ferocious rucking from the Sports forwards gaining the upper hand on their opponents. Andy Milne capped a Man of the Match performance with his second try of the game, and the contest was effectively over after a well worked try from fullback Paul Jurkewicz.

Llantwit never gave up though and continued to compete in all areas, however the final say of the match went to flanker Steve Hearne who capitalised on some suspect tackling to score and finish off a well earned cup victory for the Sports.
