Sports 2nd XV 14 Kenfig Hill 2nds 13
It's been a long time coming, but on Saturday the Sports lanced a old festering boil and beat Kenfig Hill on the Bandstand field. A considerably improved Sports team caused the visitors a major surprise early on when following a fairly involved build up among the Sports back line full back Carter crashed through, was stopped short, fed to Jay Dent who finished off the impressive passage of play. The Sports inflicted considerable pressure on Kenfig Hill for the rest of the first quarter but were unable to breach the last line of defence and a couple of wayward offloads and dropped passes allowed KH to steady the ship.
Towards the end of the first half KH made a rare visit to the Sports' 25 secured a scrum and some weak tackling allowed the KH number 8 to crash over. A bout of Sports indiscipline allowed KH to bang over a penalty which gave them a half time lead of 7-8.
Changes in the second half saw the introduction of veteran pop Parrot and together with man of the match Kurt Dent, Phil John and Justin Jones started to make inroads into KH territory.
However KH then entered a period of dominance and scored in the corner with an unconverted try. With the clock ticking down increased Sports pressure failed to secure any further points until in a rare display of constructive thinking Sports Number 8 Andrew Ward hacked a loose ball 30 yards down the filed. Fantastic chasing by Ben Adrian and Ian Hearn panicked the KH fullback, Hearn tackled, stole the ball and scored under the posts. Simon Partridge slotted over the conversion.
Victory to the Sports 14-13.
Team manager Mark Thomas commented ''Simon Partridge needs more kicking practice''
