Sports 17 Cefn Cribbwr 15

Very few points have separated these two sides over the last few seasons and last Saturday was no exception. With a cross wind that favoured neither side Cefn kicked off and began to dominate the early stages with their 9 man game. Skipper Tony Davies at number 8, being the driving force and prime mover. It took just 5 minutes of this pressure to allow space on the blind side of a driving maul for winger Mark Lewis to squeeze over for an unconverted try.
From the re-start the Sports gained good territory and forced a penalty when Roddy Boobyer carried the ball well and was stopped from releasing the ball. Nathan Townley made the score 3-5 after 12 minutes. At this stage the Sports were coping well with the forward game that Cefn opted for and Gary Punter, Ryan Wallis and Jamie Lorrimer in the back row were playing exceptionally well.

Swalec Cup

Tylorstown 34 Sports 13

On a cool afternoon this Cup game favoured the division 3 home side who were most adept at playing the rather narrow pitch. Whilst the Sports wanted to widen the attack whenever possible, Tylorstown played a more rounded game attacking through their strong pack and widening the attack when needed. The opening encounters saw a ping-pong of high balls aimed at testing the defence.
Each holding out until a scrum near the Sports line allowed an extra drive to release quick ball for the home centre Llewellyn to open the scoring wide out. A fine conversion from Jason Pike taking the lead to 7-0. From the re-start the home team conceded a penalty which Nathan Townley converted, pushing the temperature of the game up a notch.

Starting this tough local derby both sides were unbeaten and it was always going to be a close encounter. The Sports played with the strong wind, and the first 15 minutes were even until a handling error in front of the Sports posts allowed Cliff Ricketts to give the home side a 3 points lead.
From the kick off, the Sports put on pressure and with a good charge down in the centre and a strong run from Roddy Boobyer, followed by quick release of the ball to the left wing, where wing forward Rhys Dowling was at hand to cross in the corner. Nathan Townley’s conversion falling short.
