Manchester United have been eliminated from the Carabao cup by championship side, Bristol City. United were shocked as their opponent showed why they deserve a place in the Carabao cup semi finals ahead of them. Despite a strong team selection made by Jose Mourinho, his side were still unable to see off the championship team.
Bristol were creating chances early on in the first half and had opportunities to take the lead but that didn’t happen. They showed that they were not afraid of the defending champions and were going to show them that they really deserve the semi final slot.
Both sides had a moment to take the lead. Rashford first saw his shot hit the woodwork on 21 minutes, followed by Daley Blind denying Smith from scoring with a well timed tackle. Things remain square as both sides failed to hit the back of the net in the first half.
Bristol started from where they stopped in the first and started getting chances to take the lead early on in the second half. Bryan finally got the match opener when he beats Blind after a counter attacking move in the 51st minute.
United did not allow the goal celebration to last more than seven minute when Ibrahimovic equalised in the 58th. The Swede scored a free kick just outside the box 8 months after returning injuring his knee.
United could have gotten the winner through Lukaku who Mourinho sent on in the second half but the Bristol goalkeeper denied him and his team mates a second goal of the night. As the pressure pile up on them, they remain resolute and finally got what they wanted. It was through Matty Taylor cross which Smith converted.
Every Bristol fans at Ashton Gate went out of this world to mark their victory over United. The victory was the second a lower division team will be knocking United out of the league cup as holders, the first being Southend in 2006/07 season.
